The Memorial
Arts Charity

Remembering the past  -  shaping the future

The Memorial Arts Charity provides training in letter design and carving and exists to widen people's awareness and appreciation of the memorial arts.We play a critical role in ensuring that Britain's long tradition of fine lettering and memorial art continues to flourish. The need to establish an educational charity became apparent through the work of Memorials by Artists, our company founded in 1988 to bring together skilled letter-carvers with people seeking to commission good individually designed memorials, and other lettered works. Letter-carving workshops: We run an annual programme of short letter-carving courses, in stone and wood, in various places throughout the UK, for beginners and those with some experience in the lettering arts. We also run a symposium for professionals, from time to time.Letter-carving apprenticeships: Our apprenticeship scheme was established in 2002 and to date four two-year apprenticeships have been successfully completed. The Art & Memory Collection - A National Collection of Contemporary Memorial Art:   The Art & Memory exhibition was launched in the gardens, parkland and arboretum of West Dean College on 2nd April and finished on 1st November 2009. The Collection is in the process of being distributed to six permanent public sites and will evolve over time. A full list of permanent venues can be found on the Art & Memory Collection page.

Details of the Art & Memory Collection and how to purchase a fully illustrated catalogue, are available on the Latest News page.

We welcome enquires on any aspect of lettering and/or the memorial arts.
